California Vehicle Code Section 27803 requires all motorcycle drivers and passengers to wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle. Studies have continuously shown that a rider who does not wear a helmet has a much higher risk of serious brain injury and death when a head on collision occurs. The risks are dramatically reduced when a helmet is worn.

Next, be vigilant on the road and take all necessary precautions. Avoid lane splitting at high speeds. Stay out of automobiles blind spots so car drivers will be able to see you before changing lanes. Look out for potholes and traffic hazards which affect the balance of the bike and increase the likelihood that a biker might fall off. Avoid drinking alcohol while riding. Do not use a cell phone while riding or use any device to take your attention away from the road. Most importantly always be attentive of other drivers on the road, pay attention to your surrounding, and anticipate a car performing a lane change as to avoid getting hit.

Third, maintain your motorcycle at peak performance. Keep your tires at the recommended air pressure, and make sure your motorcycle engine has been checked for any issues. Any motorcycle issues with tires, acceleration braking or deceleration could affect your balance and throw you off your bike.
